Finding refers to the process to sales, marketing, getting new
business, getting commitments for projects, and so forth. Any activity that
will lead to future sales falls into the “Finding” category.
Several years ago I learned the
hard lesson of ignoring the Finding function. As I prepared to move from one
house to another and turn my old house into a rental unit, I spent about two
months moving, fixing up the old house, finding renters, and so forth. I did
the work that needed to be done in my consulting business (the Grinding),
but I just didn’t have the time to try to make new sales.
Those were two very busy but profitable months. The problem came three
months later when the phone stopped ringing! Ignoring the Finding function
for a day or two doesn’t have much impact. But you can’t ignore it for much
longer. You don’t have to be pushy, but you do have to make contact and have
discussions about future projects—or there won’t be any future projects!
Minding is the management
side of your business. Someone has to balance the books, maintain focus on
the “vision” or mission of the company, and generally steer the ship. This
is not a function played solely by the Chief Executive Office or President.
Everyone has to be a Minder.
Recently, one of my clients hired
a new person. Within a week she suggested to her supervisor that some
improvements could be made in the way they handled client data management.
Her case was apparently pretty strong because I was asked to look at the
issue the next time I came in the office. This is a wonderful example of
Minding by someone who’s not a manager (and of an organization open to
improvements!).
Grinding means getting the
work done. After you make the sales and get the organization focused on
success, you have to deliver the goods and services. Promises have to be
fulfilled.
In some sense these three cannot
be very much separated. After all, excellent delivery of goods is one
of the best sales tools you have. In very small businesses, one
person may be the finder, the minder, and the grinder. In larger
organizations, these chores are divided between different people or
different departments. But each person must be aware of these three
functions and practice them.
Ideally, you will make Finding,
Minding, and Grinding a unified, successful strategy for
your company. We’d love to help you explore this approach to business
success.
